How many foreign consulates are in the United States?
Our records list 157 missions in the US from the 22 home countries the database covers: embassies, consulates general, consulates and honorary posts. It is a floor, not the full count, because the database tracks 22 sending countries, not every country on earth. The form of this page follows Travisa's travel visa FAQs; every answer here is counted from our data.
Which US city has the most consulates?
Under a single recorded spelling, Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston tie at 12. Merging spelling variants changes the answer: Washington totals 19 across Washington DC and Washington, D.C., and New York totals 16 across New York City and New York. Anyone who gives you one city without mentioning spellings is rounding.
Can I book a consulate appointment online?
Usually not from the consulate's own listing. Only 23 of 1,457 records (1.6 percent) publish an appointment booking link. The rest route you through phone numbers (815 records publish one), email (484), or external platforms the listing never names. If a site demands a fee just to reveal an appointment link, treat it as a third party, not the consulate.
Is an honorary consulate a real consulate?
It is a real office with a shorter mandate. Our Honorary or Real? matrix scores 32 office-and-service combinations: an honorary post fully handles 18, handles 8 with limits, and cannot do 6 at all, and every one of the 6 cannot-dos belongs to honorary posts. Visas and passports are where the limits bite; local guidance and document intake are where honorary posts earn their keep.
Which consulate serves my state?
The one whose jurisdiction list names your state, and 702 of our 1,457 records (48 percent) are regional posts with such a list. The other 755 are embassies covering a whole country. Distance is not the rule: Houston's Egyptian post covers Colorado on paper, and its German post covers five states. Our jurisdiction guide walks the lookup.
Do consulates close on my country's holidays or theirs?
Both, potentially: an office abroad commonly observes the host country's holidays and its home country's, which is why our earlier guide calls it the two-calendars problem. Only 293 of 1,457 records publish office hours at all, and fewer still publish a holiday list, so the closure check is a phone call, not a search.
Which country runs the biggest consular network?
In our records, China, with 198 missions, ahead of the United States (188) and Russia (173). The ranking counts recorded posts from the 22 covered home countries, so it says who built the widest recorded network among major senders, not who has the most capable one.
Why do consulate listings disagree with each other?
Because the underlying records are uneven: 93 percent describe their services with one generic line, addresses are missing in 42 percent of records, and the same city appears under two spellings in the two largest US hosts. Directories copy each other, so one stale record becomes five identical listings. Verify against the sending country's foreign ministry list before traveling, and use our five checks on any office you found through search.
